It was fun being in third grade again at the Jefferson Elementary School in Franklin, MA. These characters helped present The Princess and the Cafe on the Moat reader’s theater-style. Thanks for inviting me, Mr. Chelman! Your students did a fabulous job!
A delightful display of books greeted me when I popped into An Unlikely Story Bookstore on the book’s official pub date (March 15, 2018). Looking forward to sharing the story with everyone on March 24 during an interactive storytelling event. The props are just about ready!

Margie Markarian’s sweet story is an enchanting fairy tale for today’s socially conscious and active kids. Instead of needing rescue, this princess looks for opportunities to help others. Markarian’s language is charmingly ‘medieval,’ making the story fun to read aloud while inspiring listeners.

The Princess and the Cafe on the Moat is a sweet little book about our basic human need to be needed, and our desire to be helpful. Ms. Markarian’s prose is not only gentle, it is perfect for children ages 4 to 8 who are only just learning what it is like to feel necessary and needed. The fast-paced story line identifies what it is like to be little and overlooked, but it offers a solution (which the little princess figures out on her own!)

The precious illustrations beautifully depict the princess and her need to be busy and help others. The author’s note at the end discusses the elements of fairy tales and has a message of sharing. The book even includes an activity to encourage good deeds. This would be a great tie-in to both a fairy tale unit and a unit on kindness. Recommended.
